BLACK SAGE SMUDGE STICKS
Black Sage (Salvia mellifera) is a small, aromatic, evergreen shrub belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae). Black sage is also known as Black Mugwort, Black Sagebrush, Magical Sage or even Dream Weed. Native to the coastal regions of California and Baja California, Mexico, it thrives in dry, chaparral habitats. The plant typically grows between 1–2 meters (3–6 feet) tall, producing dark green, oblong leaves that release a strong fragrance when crushed. During drought, the leaves darken significantly. In spring and early summer, Black Sage blooms with clusters of pale blue, lavender, or white flowers, which attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
When burned, Black Sage emits a rich, earthy, and slightly sweet aroma with hints of mint and pine. The scent is more grounding and less sharp than White Sage (Salvia apiana), making it an excellent choice for deep meditation and dreamwork. Its smoke is smooth and not overpowering, creating a calming and protective atmosphere.
Black sage is used to encourage visions and vivid dreams and is known as an herb for inner healing and introspection. When burned before bedtime, it aids in restful sleep and pleasant dreams. Black Sage is used for shamanic journeying and for protection during such excursions. It is burned in the home to increase positive energy and remove negative and harmful energies.
