A native plant that helps us connect with our true self, our spirit and our inner shaman.
Parataniwha, also known as New Zealand Begonia, is a striking herbaceous native perennial. It forms sprawling clumps 1 to 2 metres tall with large, asymmetrical, deeply wrinkled leaves, dark green above and often purplish beneath. In the warmer months it grows very small flowers that turn into tiny single seeded fruit.
Parataniwha grows in damp, shaded forest, favouring streamsides, gullies and seepages where soil stays consistently moist. It is endemic to the North Island and found within lowland to montane forests from North Cape to Kapiti Island and the Tararua Range.
It's Māori name, Parataniwha roughly translates to “home of the taniwha”, which reflects the natural habitat where this plant grows, in damp, shaded lowland forest areas and gullies, at the base of waterfalls and alongside waterways.
Parataniwha is The Shaman Essence. It is a plant ally that helps us connect with our true self, our spirit and our inner shaman. It helps us bridge the gap between mundane and magical reality and links us to the spirit world. It helps us enter the silence and heightens the powers of shamanic vision.
Parataniwha supports us take responsibility for our reality, look at our shadow and face our fears with love and non-judgement. It supports us to rise above the fears and limitations of the personality and listen to the spirit or higherself for guidance. It restores hope when we have fallen off the path.
Parataniwha is a plant ally for those who are ready to step outside of mass consciousness and follow their own spiritual path. It supports us to break through to a new way of being when we are stuck, unsatisfied and disillusioned with an old way of living. It helps us to 'walk the talk.'
