Matata | Taurepo (Rhabdothamnus solandri), Oakura, November 2015 Matata is a small shrub endemic to New Zealand. Matata grows to two metres high and is found naturally in the North Island and its adjacent offshore islands. It grows in coastal to lowland forests, near streams, on rocky slopes and clinging to cliff faces.

It has distinctive flowers that come in shades of orange-red, orange with red veins, and yellow with red venation. It flowers year-round, peaking between October and February. The trumpet shaped flowers are specifically adapted for pollination by the long tapered beaks of our native honeyeating birds, the Hihi, Tieke, Bellbird and Tui.

Matata is associated with the astrological sign of Gemini and it is a constitutional essence for those born between 30th May-8th June. It’s also a plant ally for those who have planets in the sign of Gemini between 10°-19°59’.

Matata is the Adaptability Essence. It promotes a calm mind and mental tranquility. Matata helps those with busy minds and excess mental energy. It's a great essence when our heads feel full and we are overloaded with information.

It is associated with the archetype of the Student and is a great essences for who are having difficulty learning. It promotes receptivity to new ideas and information. I often give this essence to children who are smart but are having trouble learning at school.

It is an ally for those who can't switch off their minds and is a flower essence that can help people who can't sleep due to a busy mind. Matata is helpful for those who are always worrying or experiencing distressing unwanted thoughts. It helps hyperactive minds to slow down, focus and assimilate information.
