Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea), also known as the Egyptian Blue Water Lily, is an aquatic flowering plant native to parts of eastern Africa and associated with the ancient civilisation of Egypt. Its exquisite blue petals, golden centre and delicate fragrance have captivated people for thousands of years.

Blue Lotus is highly regarded as a plant for meditation, dreamwork and elevating consciousness. It is used to open the third eye, deepen intuition, and to induce subtle euphoria. Blue Lotus is also valued as a natural aphrodisiac, known to promote relaxation, warmth, sensuality and heart centred connection.

The flowers contain aporphine and nuciferine, which research suggests may support restful sleep, enhance dream recall, lucid dreaming, mental clarity and focus, mood elevation and relaxation without sedation. Unlike sedatives that dull the mind, Blue Lotus dissolves physical tension while preserving mental clarity.

Growing in still and slow-moving waters, Blue Lotus is an enduring botanical symbol of rebirth, divine consciousness and the mysteries of life. Its flowers open during the day and close at night, a daily rhythm that came to symbolise the movement of the sun, the renewal of existence and the emergence of light from darkness.

In ancient Egypt, Blue Lotus was closely associated with Nefertem, the god of perfume, beauty, healing and the sunrise. According to one creation myth, a magnificent blue water lily emerged from the primordial waters of Nun, opening its petals to reveal the newborn sun god Ra, whose daily journey across the sky represented the eternal triumph of light over darkness.

Blue Lotus appears frequently in ancient Egyptian paintings, temple decorations, tombs and ceremonial objects. It was often depicted in the hands of deities, offered to the dead or held by people participating in banquets and religious celebrations. The flower's association with the afterlife made it an especially meaningful symbol of rebirth and the soul's continuing journey.

Blue Lotus is also associated with love, sensuality, pleasure and the celebration of life. In ancient Egyptian art, the flower frequently appears in scenes of feasting, music, dancing and intimate companionship. Blue Lotus symbolises the integration of beauty, sensuality, emotional connection and sacred experience.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Blue Lotus is considered a heart and liver meridian herb, believed to calm the spirit (shen) while maintaining mental clarity. It Ayurveda it is a tridoshic herb that can help balance all three doshas, particularly beneficial for calming Vata and cooling Pitta.

The flowers are used to make tea, added to ritual baths, burned as incense and can be also be smoked. The Ancient Egyptians infused Blue Lotus in wine. Blue Lotus tea and tinctures are attracting interest among people exploring alternatives to alcohol.

Blue Lotus is a key ingredient in my Third Eyed Chakra Botanical Tea.
