Frankincense, also called olibanum, is an aromatic gum resin containing a volatile oil that is used in incense and perfumes. Frankincense is obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia which are found in Somalia, Yemen, Oman, and parts of India and Pakistan.

The woody, spicy fragrance of burning frankincense is synonymous with religious ceremony around the world and is commonly used in meditation practice. A deep, earthy, and woody base note that evokes ancient forests. It can have a subtle lemon-like, peppery, or balsamic undertone that give it brightness.

Frankincense incense has been revered for thousands of years for its profound spiritual and energetic qualities. Frankincense is traditionally used to cleanse spaces of negative energy. It is believed to create a protective barrier against negative influences or psychic attacks. Burning frankincense is thought to open and activate the crown and third-eye chakras, enhancing meditation, prayer, and divine connection. The burning resin inspires purification and centering of the mind, body and spirit.

Frankincense was valued in ancient times in worship and as a medicine and is still an important incense resin, particularly in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. Frankincense is one of the gifts of the Magi presented to Jesus at his birth, symbolizing his divinity. Frankincense was also used by the ancient Egyptians in temple rituals, mummification processes, and for making kyphi, a sacred incense blend.
