OPOPOPNAX (SWEET MYRRH)

$8.00Price

Opoponax is known as the “sweet myrrh” of Arabia, and shares the same genus as Myrrh (Commiphora). This resin variety, commonly referred to as “Hagar” in Somalia, has a deep, sensuous nature, both darker in color and aroma than its sister Myrrh. The resin is usually reddish-brown or amber-colored.

Its rich, complex fragrance has been prized for its calming, purifying, and spiritually uplifting properties. The fragrance of opoponax is warm, balsamic, and sweet with earthy undertones. It has hints of honey, spice, and a deep, musky richness, often compared to a softer, sweeter version of myrrh.

Burned as incense, opoponax is known for clearing negative energies and creating a purified, serene space. It is often used as an incense to evoke, stimulate and awaken sensory perception or awareness and intuition. It supports deep meditation, dream work, and enhances psychic abilities, making it ideal for divination or shamanic journeys. Opoponax is believed to open pathways to spiritual insight, emotional release, and soul healing.

King Solomon regarded opoponax as one of the "noblest" of all incense gums. It has been used for centuries in religious and spiritual ceremonies and is said to promote peace and harmony. Also called Incense of the Lion, various cultures used opoponax to guard against negative influences, purification of places and protection. Opoponax was used by Egyptians and in ancient Middle Eastern rituals for anointing, embalming, and temple offerings.
