Palo Santo, meaning "Holy Wood" in Spanish, is a tree native to South America, primarily found in Ecuador, Peru, and parts of Brazil. It belongs to the Burseraceae family, which includes frankincense and myrrh. The tree grows in dry tropical forests and can reach up to 20 meters (66 feet) tall. It produces yellow flowers and small, greenish fruits.

Palo Santo emits a warm, woody, and slightly citrusy aroma when burned. It has notes of pine, mint, lemon, and soft vanilla, creating a sweet yet earthy scent. The resin within the wood is what produces its distinctive fragrance, and the scent lingers in the air long after extinguishing.

The uplifting and pleasantly aromatic smoke of Palo Santo enhances the vibration of any environment, facilitates creativity, and attracts positive energy. It is used to clear negative energy, similar to white sage, but with a gentler, uplifting quality. It is burned to enhance mindfulness, focus, and spiritual connection. The scent has calming effects, helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and emotional tension.

In the Shamanic history of South America, Palo Santo is said to remove negativity and obstacles and attract good fortune. Throughout Amazonia, shamans have been using Palo Santo in medicinal practices to help with relieving symptoms of common colds and flu, asthma, headaches, stress, anxiety, emotional pain and various other diseases. Used by the Inca, Quechua, and other indigenous Amazonian cultures in ceremonies to purify spaces, ward off evil spirits, and invite positive energy. Shamans and curanderos (healers) use Palo Santo in rituals for physical and energetic healing, often combined with other sacred plants like ayahuasca. It has been integrated into Catholic rituals in South America, where it is sometimes burned during religious ceremonies.
